John T. McAllister, M.D.

GENERAL OPHTHALMOLOGY

Dr. John T. McAllister is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in general adult eye care, with particular interest in cataract surgery and laser-assisted cataract surgery.

 

Dr. McAllister received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Brigham Young University. He took a leave of absence during his undergraduate studies to serve a two-year

ecclesiastical mission in Brazil. He attended the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he received his medical degree, graduating with honors in research and receiving the Millmann Award, the highest award given annually in the college. His medical internship was completed at Wheaton Franciscan St. Joseph Hospital's transitional program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was awarded for his bedside manner.  He received his ophthalmology training at The Eye Institute of Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he received the POET award for excellent patient care. He has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed ophthalmology and vision science articles, of which some highlights are linked below.

 

Dr. McAllister joined NVOA in July of 2014. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and serves on the Academy’s Health Policy Committee. He also serves on American Medical Association’s RVS Update Committee (RUC), and on the Board of Directors of the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology and the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.

 

Dr. McAllister and his wife are the proud parents of four young children. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, singing, painting, and playing with his kids.
