Amritha D. Sundaresan, M.D.

Dr. Amritha Sundaresan specializes in comprehensive ophthalmology and cataract surgery. She evaluates and treats patients with routine and complex cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, age related eye diseases such as macular degeneration, and other eye conditions. 

​Dr. Sundaresan completed the very competetive Rice/Baylor 8 year medical ​program. She graduated summa cum laude from Rice University with 2 prestigious awards – the Rice University Service Award and the Outstanding Senior Award. She has volunteered internationally in South America, specifically in Colombia and Peru. She was awarded the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award for her service in delivering over 250 hours of public health education in Cusco, Peru.  At Baylor College of Medicine, she served as the president of the Ophthalmology Interest Group and won the Women of Excellence award upon graduation. She then completed ophthalmology residency at the Washington University in St. Louis, where she was considered one of the best surgeons in her program. 

She has been first author of numerous scientific articles and presented her research at many conferences, both nationally and globally, including the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeries (ASCRS), and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASOPRS). She is proficient in Spanish and speaks conversational Telugu. 

During her free time, she loves exploring new restaurants in the DMV with her husband, strength training, and trying out local coffee shops.

After 19 years of providing exceptional eye care to our community, Dr. Ellis will be retiring at the end of July 2026.

We are incredibly grateful for his dedication, compassion, and commitment to his patients throughout his career. His expertise and kindness have made a lasting impact on countless individuals and families.
